Crafting The Schism (2007)

A woman saw an angel rushing towards her carrying a torch and a bucket of water. "Where are you going with that torch and that water," she asked, "what will you do with them?"

"With the water," the angel answered, "I will put out the fires of hell, and with the torch I will burn down the mansions of heaven; then we will see who really loves God."

I chose a more ecclectic and androgynous figment of angel and substituted the torch with a Molotov cocktail. I didn't even bother with the bucket as sometimes the obvious is more effective when omitted. A style that is out of character with my usual detailed M.O., this piece was anger manifested. After nearly 30 practicing years, I left the Catholic Church Institution and took God with me [read all about it]. I felt an emergency of self in expressing my immediate feelings and this was the dark result. I needed to get it out of my system. Self-excommunication has become my key to enlightenment and having made peace with this long-time-coming 'divorce', I can now move on.

Asphyxia Opens Pandora's Box (1996)

. $2500 ...CONTACT SELLER

I wanted to dazzle the eye with a fruit basket o' colors, directional movement and a collision of nonsensical and random objects. In the spirit of Another Wolf at Amethystine's Door, I learned that people who asphyxiate can turn yellow (I know, a bit grotesque). So I tinted the heroine's skin as such. I spent much time and fun on this piece and it was the first and only piece I've brought to life where I incorporated an actual photo of myself....can you spot it?

The Lunatic is in the Hall (1998)

Extracting the lyrics from a Pink Floyd song, Lunatic was actually a final project for my college Drawing I class (required, not requested). The teacher asked us to create a piece in the style of the great Dutch artists such as Vermeer that reflected our feelings about the class. I was bored with the basics of the class. Did that come across here at all?

In comparison to my more detailed pieces, I completed this airbrush and mixed media project swiftly. I have received so many compliments on this particular piece.

A World Away (1992)

Flashback: I remember working on this piece while I manned my own little summer rummage sale in a small brick house that my parents rented out, but at the time were between tenants. The idea here was to convey the feeling of being in another time and place. The Earth in the background emphasizes my plight. There is sadness, though. The two lovers are resigned, in a way.... Almost like hearing the alarm going off during an absolutely beautiful dream, and trying to block it out, trying to cling to that dream and wish it was real, but knowing all too well that it is time to wake.

Untitled Figure Study (1993)

The influence of Roman and Greek statues has always intrigued me. Many that have fallen over time due to war or culture shifts or age seem to have such drama about them and end up in positions that seem to be just as artistic as they themselves were meant to be standing in their upright positions. Cracked and chipped, above land or under water covered in algae, they carry memories and scars of eras past. I appreciate the fact that "beautiful women" were physically more voluptuous back then, than what is seen as "beautiful" today. I hope I never have to witness an anorexic monument.
