Self Portrait (1999)

At first, I was intimidated by the idea of drawing using strictly markers, but it turned out to be one of those basic art utensils, which I admittedly overlooked, that can produce wonderful results.

One of my favorite classes in college was Marker Rendering. The teacher was a boisterous and crass 60-year old Italian man who swore like a sailor and called every girl in class "Jellybean". He was a veteran marker artist and did some of the most amazing work I've ever seen.

With this project, he paid me such a compliment. One that I will never forget in all my life. I was always so nervous about showing him my projects because he was so brutally honest. When I showed him my project, he straight-faced simply said, "That defies logic."

MADD Project (1999)

When I walked into Senior Portfolio class, all I had were my raw drawings, really. The professor said that, for my portfolio, I needed to display them "in an application". This piece is a marker rendering of my sister, Abby. I envisioned it as an ad for MADD because I'd seen portraits for MADD in this particular format for years. Emotionally, it was somewhat difficult to put my little sister's face in such an application, but it worked out as an ad.

Lord Cecil DuPont (1999)

This project was an experiment with the computer program Painter®. I used a photo of my husband (fianceé at the time), and scanned it into the program. I used an airbrush technique to paint the portrait, then I added the fencer's costume and background.
